Barack Obama, Ted Kennedy, and Healthcare: Three's Company (Not)
Advice to President Obama: If you want your healthcare bill to pass, then having Senator Ted Kennedy publicly supporting the bill as his “life’s cause” is not the route to take.
This is the same Senator Kennedy who once upon a time:
- Drunk-drived off the road and into a lake at Chappaquidick,
- Escaped from the car while leaving his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne behind;
- Passed about a dozen houses without knocking for help;
- Returned to his hotel and went to bed;
- Waited until the next morning to notify authorities that Ms. Kopechne was trapped in a car underwater.
Turns out that Ms. Kopechne found an airpocket and was alive for some time after Kennedy left her and could have survived had he gotten immediate help. But why send him to jail for voluntary manslaughter? Let him off the hook because, hey, he’s a Kennedy.
And, hey, he cares about the well-being of U.S. citizens. That’s why he wants universal healthcare for everyone. Because he cares whether other human beings live or die.
